Aquilegia formosa

Aquilegia is the Latin word for eagle, with the flower’s five spurs resembling eagle talons. Aquilegia formosa is used medicinally.

What does the species look like?

Western columbine is a bushy, clump-forming, perennial, herbaceous plant generally less than 3 feet tall, but occasionally growing up to 5 feet tall. The red and yellow flowers are showy with each flower containing both male and female parts, and are insect- and hummingbird-pollinated.

Western columbine grows from low elevations to timberline on moist sites that are open to partly shaded, in chaparral, woodlands, and forests.
