What does the species look like?

Needle and thread is a densely tufted, erect, perennial grass growing 1 to 4.3 feet tall. Its tiny, inconspicuous, green flowers have both male and female parts and a very long hair (awn). The flowers are arranged on branches along the inflorescence, which can be compact or open, and sometimes drooping. Its flowers are wind-pollinated.

Needle and thread grows in dry hills and plains among cool desert, grassland, pinyon-juniper, and open, subalpine plant communities. It is adapted to well-drained, gravelly, sandy, fine sandy loam, sandy loam, and clay soil textures. It is moderately to highly drought resistant.
