The stem sap from Impatiens capensis is mucilaginous, and used to remedy skin irritations caused by other plants from the same habitat.

What does the species look like?

Jewelweed is an annual, herbaceous plant growing 2 to 5 feet tall, or more. This plant has two types of flowers: showy flowers that open, and inconspicuous flowers that don't open and which are self-pollinated. Its showy, orange flowers have both male and female parts and are bird-, insect-, and self-pollinated.

Jewelweed grows on moist ground in marshes, swamp and lake edges, low woods, slopes, stream banks, ravines, and roadsides, and tolerates some disturbance and flooding.
