What does the species look like?

Western wheatgrass is a sod-forming, perennial grass growing erect to 8 to 36 inches tall. Its green flowers are tiny, inconspicuous, and arranged along a spike. They are wind-pollinated.

Western wheatgrass grows in grasslands and sagebrush deserts and pinyon-juniper woodlands, and along ephemeral creeks, hillslopes, and disturbed sites, and is well adapted to well-drained bottomlands. It grows on moist to dry soils, preferring loamy to clayey soils, and has a high tolerance for saline-alkali (salt-affected) soils.
