What does the species look like?

White spruce is an evergreen conifer growing 40 to 60 feet tall. Male and female cones are present on the same tree. The small, reddish male cones bear pollen, and the larger, female cones start as greenish to purplish and mature to light brown with papery scales. This tree matures in one season. Pollination occurs by wind.

White spruce is found in boreal forests, bogs, and coniferous and mixed coniferous-hardwood forests. It favors well-drained mineral soils on upland areas and does not do well in areas where the water table is high.
