What does the species look like?

Woodland pinkroot is an erect, perennial herbaceous plant growing 1 to 2 feet tall, and can form clumps through its underground creeping stems. Its unusual, showy flowers are red on the outside and yellow within, and have both male and female parts. The flowers are tightly lined up along one side of a stalk at the top of the plant.

Woodland pinkroot is adapted to a variety of soil types, and is usually found growing in rich, moist soils at the partially shady edges of wooded areas, in woods and ravines, or along stream banks.
